Philmont Practice Hike: January 18-19

Philmont Practice – Jan 17, 2020 Hocking Hills

Hello Troop 332 Philmont Crew!

I am looking forward to a large turnout for the next practice hike on Saturday January 18th.  Attached is the permission slip and here are some details.  You can bring the permission slip to the event, but you MUST sign up on the link below by January 13, so we can purchase enough food.

Please email me at cruss383@gmail.com to let me know that you are going.

  • We will meet at the church on Saturday January 18th at 6:15 am.
  • We will return to the church mid to late afternoon on Sunday January 19th.
  • Packing list can be found here:  https://www.troop-332.com/?wpfb_dl=39
  • Plan on bringing capacity to carry 2-3 full liters of water.  It will be used for drinking and cooking
  • We will hike at a comfortable pace.  It’s important for the Scouts to learn early on that you only go as fast as the entire group is comfortable.  At this stage, it will be a pace around a 30-minute mile with some brief breaks along the way
  • We will spend time setting up camp and how we split duties on the trip
  • Practice hikes are the best time to discuss and compare gear
  • Our cost for the trip will be food and camping.  We estimate it will be approx. $12 per person and will be paid directly to the person who purchases the food.
  •  Plan on bringing your own trail snacks like jerky or trail mix.  Salty snacks are good to prevent cramps.

We will be participating in the official Hocking Hills Winter Hike.

  • The plan is to leave the group campsite (G-3, Behind the swimming pool in the State Park Campground) at 8:30 on Saturday and hike down to the Hocking Hills Winter Hike starting point.  This will be a 6-mile hike.
  • We will stop at Cedar Falls for lunch. The Logan Kiwanis serves bean soup at the Cedar Falls Parking Lot & Shelter. There is no charge for the soup, but they do have donation buckets out and available.  This will be our official lunch, so please bring something with you if you do not want the bean soup.
  • We will then continue to Ash Cave. We will return to the starting point via provided buses.
  • On Sunday morning we will hike to Whispering Cave and continue up to where the old State Park Lodge was.  We will then return to camp. This is about a 5-mile hike. I estimate that we will return to Columbus at around 2:00 PM (ESTIMATED!)
  • Rick McClellan and I are planning on going down Friday evening and camping out both nights.  You are more than welcome to join us.
